Welcome to the first edition of Vehicle Wednesdays! It may not have the same ring as "Weapon Wednesdays", but unfortunately there's no day of the week that starts with "V" and I've exhausted all of the weapons in the Halo universe. If you guys think of something I haven't covered, feel free to correct me.
It would be terrible to start with anything other than the Warthog, so off we go.
The M12 Warthog LRV, or the Chaingun Warthog, is the signature vehicle of the Halo games. It's been in every Halo game since Halo: Combat Evolved, including Halo Wars.
The Warthog is a future Humvee. It is exceptionally rugged, featuring 4x4 transmission and four-wheel steering. It can easily plow through shallow water, though it will slow the vehicle down. The vehicle is prone to roll over when making sharp turns (or being fired upon with explosives), but Spartans have no problem flipping them back over.
Most models support a three man crew consisting of a driver, passenger, and gunner. Depending on the model, this gunner will be operating an anti-aircraft gun, a rocket launcher, or a powerful gauss cannon. Despite its name, the anti-aircraft gun is very effective against infantry and ground vehicles as well.
The passenger can wield a weapon, though shooting from a moving vehicle is especially difficult. The passenger can also hold objective items, such as flags.
The driver cannot use a weapon, unless you count the massive behemoth that he is controlling. The Warthog is great for smashing enemies if you're traveling at a considerable speed, though Covenant enemies to have the ability to dive out of the way.
While the Warthog in Halo: Combat Evolved was difficult to control, this problem was remedied in Halo 2. Control was much easier, a handbrake was added, and allies were given the ability to drive. While the Warthog was no longer indestructible, the front end was very durable and able to withstand plenty of damage.
Next week I'll go over the different Warthog variants as well as some different strategies and tactics.
