A Spartan and a Covenant loyalist walk into a bar. The Spartan is sporting two UNSC sub-machine guns, while the Covenant loyalist is wielding two Type-25 Carbine's, better known as Spikers.

I forgot how the punchline goes.

Hit the jump.

So here we have two weapons that are popular for dual wielding, the SMG and the spiker. Which one would win in a fight?

Let's get the basic similarities out of the way: when dual wielding, both do considerable damage at close range. If you keep the fire up, you can tear down an opponent's shields and kill them in very little time.

As the range between you and your opponent increases, both weapons drastically lose effectiveness. Both become inaccurate, but this is possible harder to remedy with the spiker. The spiker's spikes travel slower than the SMG's bullets, forcing you to lead your targets. The spikes also tend to arc, so you'll have to take that into consideration and adjust your aim higher.

That being said, the Spiker does have considerable range, if you can aim it.

The SMG's biggest problem with aiming is its recoil causes the barrel to climb as you fire. Whereas with the spiker you'll have to aim high, with the SMG you'll have to constantly keep your reticule lowered.

One of the SMG's biggest advantages is its large magazine and ammo capacity. One SMG magazine can hold up to 60 rounds, which doubles when dual wielding. It's entirely possible to eliminate a few targets before having to reload. That's good to note, because the gun's reload time is pretty lengthy.

Fans of melee will want to use the spiker, because it's large front blades make it a fantastic melee weapon.

This comparison is much harder than last week's shotgun and mauler comparison due to the weapons' abundant similarities. However, when you break it down, I would go with the spiker. The range is slightly better and the strong melee gives it the slight edge in close combat.

Unless you're facing a shotgun, however. In that case, stay far away.

I personally hate the SMG in Halo. It's my least favorite Halo gun.

I don't own Halo 3, but I play it occasionally at a friend's house, and the spiker isn't bad. Especially dual wielding at point blank range.
